It was a great battle, on a muddy field with balls bouncing (8 fumbles) and 4 lead changes. The game also saw back-and-forth punting (10 punts) for field position. The sea-saw started when the Rockets took the opening kickoff downfield only to miss a field goal. The Bengals then drove the field and made their Field goal followed by the Rockets driving the field to make a field goal… and so it went. The score was 6-3 Rockets at Halftime.
Rich East’s Amos Marsh scored the game-winning touchdown on a six-yard scamper.
The Bengals scored the game’s first touchdown, early in the 3rd quarter, when Defender L. Caffey grabbed an errant throw and ran the field for a pick-6 putting the Bengals back on top 10-6. At the end of the 3rd Quarter Rocket Fullback Tom Woodeshick ran 11 yards for paydirt and put the Rockets ahead 13-10. The game would be decided in the 4th quarter.
The score stood still throughout the 4th quarter, as the punters kicked the balls around, until the 6-minute mark; The Rockets runner Amosh Marsh ran it in from 6 yards out and put the Rockets ahead 20-10 with 6 minutes to go.
The Bengals had another drive left in them and drove the field with fine Passing by Craig Morton. Cincinnati made the game close and scored a touchdown with a 28-yard pass to B. Conrad. After 2 onside kicks, the first erased by a penalty, the Rockets kept the ball and sat out the final seconds. A great chess match.
The Rockets gave game balls to RB Gayle Sayers (23 rushes for 105 yards) and to DE Decon Jones (2 sacks) and to the Offensive line unit (271 yards rushing no sacks).
